EdenCare Senior Living Services was looking for a new Independent Living facility design to complement its successful Assisted Living facility prototype. The new Independent Living facility would have to be developed as a prototype to be implemented throughout the United States, within a diversity of site configurations and topographic conditions. Its design also should promote an active lifestyle for seniors while providing for their day-to-day needs in a no-hassle environment.

The solution was a two-story core that would house community activities while allowing resident wings to be configured to meet the requirements of each individual site. The two-story core contains all of the residents’ social and public needs, while the resident wings remain more private and secluded. These needs are met by providing a variety of opportunities for interaction around specific interests, e.g., a library, hobby room, workshop, beauty parlor/barber shop, cinema/chapel, business center and spa/exercise space. Less structured environments were also developed, such as an ice cream parlor and screened porch with paddle fans, for casual interaction.

The Dining Room was designed to provide a fine dining experience that separated the Dining Room from the servery, which can also be used for cooking classes and demonstrations.

The three-story resident wings were structured around a Lounge where residents can rest and interact with other residents who live in that area of the facility. The Lounge also has an elevator and Laundry Room nearby for residents’ use.
