According to the American Psychological Association, “more than 39 million people in the U.S. are age 65 years or older, including 2.4 million people who identify as lesbian, gay, sexual, or transgender (LGBT).”
This population is only expected to grow as the American population ages. In comparison to their heterosexual peers, this group typically faces significant economic and health disparities. SAGE reports that LGBT seniors are “twice as likely to be single and live alone.” They’re also “four times less likely to have children,” and “far more likely to have faced discrimination and social stigma.”
In this report, we’ll explore some ways you can make your facility more welcoming and inclusive to all seniors, including those who identify as LGBTQ+.
