Tomorrow’s LTC design stars

This month, ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) announced the winners of its 2010 Student Competition, a juried national design competition recognizing outstanding talent and leadership among its ASID student members. Students are challenged to create a wellness concept geared to a societal issue.

In the long-term care field, the winner was Quoc Quach, a Student Member ASID of Kendall School of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He created concept designs for Willow Healthcare in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that support and promote resident comfort and well-being.

Judge Steffany Hollingsworth, ASID, commented on Quach’s work: “The Willow Healthcare submission…exhibited holistic thinking in the design of an environment that would contribute to the overall health and welfare of its occupants. The student provided scientific data to support the design solutions, and demonstrated well-honed ability in 3-D drawing capability as well as a working knowledge of sustainability.”

Joining Quach in ASID’s recognition of achievement was Kala Latts, a student at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Latts received an honorable mention in the competition for her concepts for the long-term care wing at the Inova Regional Department of Alzheimer’s and Dementia in Alexandria, Virginia. Her conceptual vision is based on sustainable design principles that promote the alleviation of stress for residents with Alzheimer’s and work to slow down the progression of the disease’s symptoms.

ASID Member Annette Stelmack remarked that Latts’s concept was “an ambitious undertaking, as the requirements for individuals with Alzheimer's and dementia demand extensive research.”
