Three-drug combination found to treat MRSA

A group of three antibiotics, not able to fight staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on their own, can fight MRSA in combination, according to new research out of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The findings were published in Medicinal Chemistry Communications. 

The three drugs, meropenem, piperacillin and tazobactam, have not been effective against MRSA for years. 

"MRSA infections kill 11,000 people each year in the United States, and the pathogen is considered one of the world’s worst drug-resistant microbes," principal investigator Gautam Dantas, PhD, told Outbreak News Today. "Using the drug combination to treat people has the potential to begin quickly because all three antibiotics are approved by the FDA."
