Sensor swabs for monitoring wounds under development

Researchers at Joanneum Research Forschungsgesellschaft mbH in Austria are developing a cotton swab that can measure the pH levels in chronic wounds.

Becuase it's important to keep pH levels between 6 and 7 for proper wound healing, traditional monitoring has required the collection of wound liquid to be analyzed.

The new cotton swab, however, is impregnated with indicator dyes that visibly change color to indicate the status of wound healing: green when the pH is at the proper level, red when immediate treatment is necessary.

Under the leadership of Dr. Gerhard Mohr, the team of scientists will continue to evaluate the biocompatibility of the sensor swabs and hopes to find an industrial partner to bring this development to market.
