Rating app Yelp adds nursing home reviews

Yelp, the app known for consumer rating of businesses, has partnered with ProPublica to add nursing home and hospital reviews to its platform. The plan is to incorporate "healthcare statistics and consumer opinion survey data onto the Yelp business pages of more than 25,000 medical treatment facilities," according to a press release from Yelp.

ProPublica is providing information from its own research and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for 4,600 hospitals, 15,000 nursing homes and 6,300 dialysis clinics. Information will be updated quarterly. Included with each business listing will be information about the number of serious deficiencies and fines per nursing home and emergency room wait time for hospitals, the press release stated.

"Many people think of the Yelp platform for finding great restaurants and hotels, and it certainly is," Luther Lowe, Yelp's vice president for policy told the Washington Post. "We're taking data that otherwise might live in some government PDF that's hard to find and we're putting it in a context where it makes sense for people who may be in the middle of making critical decisions."
