Obama nominates Andy Slavitt as new CMS Administrator

On Thursday afternoon, President Barack Obama asked the U.S. Senate to confirm Andy Slavitt as the next Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator. Slavitt has been serving as CMS's acting administrator since February when Marilyn Tavenner stepped down. 

According to Bloomberg Business, Slavitt became a government employee in 2014 after working as an executive vice president at UnitedHealth Group's Optum unit, which helped fix the issues related to the initial launch of the health insurance marketplace website, healthcare.gov.

The American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) welcomed Obama's nomination.

"Our members are excited to see Andy nominated as CMS Administrator," AHCA/NCAL CEO Mark Parkinson said in a press release. "He has ably served in the acting capacity for several months, and his acumen across the healthcare spectrum will serve the agency and our nation well."
