Obama announces OMB, HUD nominations

President Barack Obama yesterday nominated San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro to serve as secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) succeeding the current secretary, Shaun Donovan, whom Obama has nominated for the position of director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The OMB position is being vacated by Sylvia Mathews Burwell, whom Obama nominated to replace Kathleen Sebelius as the next secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

One association representing not-for-profit aging-services providers says it is pleased with the decisions.

“Access to affordable housing that is sufficient to meet the needs of a growing population of low-income seniors is a major issue for our country,” said Larry Minnix, president and CEO of LeadingAge. “As we face a budget deficit, LeadingAge looks forward to working with both leaders and with Congress to enhance and expand housing with services models, especially those included in the HUD 202 program, that can address the federal deficit, demonstrate a return on taxpayers’ investments and improve long-term care health outcomes for seniors.”
