Older adults compete in Gay Games

Older adults are well-represented at the international Gay Games 2014, which began Aug. 9 in Northeast Ohio. Sites throughout the Cleveland and Akron area are hosting events for 10 days. More than 30,000 participants and guests representing 65 countries are expected to compete in or watch 33 different sports and types of activities.

Participation by older adults is as varied as the event’s agenda. For instance:

• A 99-year old woman is expected to compete in track-and-field events held on the University of Akron campus, notes the university. (The Cleveland Plain Dealer and Akron Beacon Journal subsequently published articles about Ida Keeling.)
• The Gay Games website profiles several athletes, including 77-year-old track participant Jerry Lewis, 74-year-old billiards player John Andrew Gallery, 58-year-old bodybuilder Douglas Bates and others.
• A 65-year-old man and his son will sing together in the Gay Games 9 Choral Extravaganza on Aug. 13, according to the Ashtabula Star-Beacon.
• A 62-year-old and a 59-year-old participated in a goat-dressing and steer-decorating competition Aug. 10 and were featured in the Akron Beacon Journal.
