The New Wave of Foodservice Technology in Senior Care

Direct-care worker campaign raises $3.4 million

The Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute (PHI) is more than a third of the way to its $9 million goal in a campaign launched a year ago to raise funds to improve the jobs of nursing home assistants, home health aides and personal care aides and thereby improve the quality of care delivered in nursing homes, community-based settings and homes.

PHI has raised $3.4 million, exceeding its initial $3 million goal, during the first round of its three-part, five-year philanthropic equity campaign. The first phase was supported by the John A. Hartford Foundation, which donated $1.6 million; the F.B. Heron Foundation ($1.5 million), the Booth Ferris Foundation ($200,000) and the Clark Foundation ($100,000).

Philanthropic equity, according to PHI, uses grants to support major program growth rather than funding a specific program. The Heron Foundation recommended the approach to PHI as a way to strengthen its sustainability and impact. Funds have been used to strengthen management, informational technology and development capacity; expand PHI’s coaching and consulting services and workforce and curriculum development field-service capacity; and strengthening balance sheet and cash reserves.

PHI aims to raise another $6 million by early summer 2015.
