Because San Luis Obispo County's senior population is growing faster than in any other county in California, and because more seniors are opting to live in their own homes, SafeinHome announced this week it was rolling out a smartphone-enabled service that lets adult children check on their aging parents without intruding in their lives.
The new service includes a mobile application with wireless in-home sensors that can be placed unobtrusively throughout the senior’s home. These sensors track the senior’s motion and daily activity, as well as stove and room temperature and pillbox usage, then transmit this information directly to the caregiver’s smartphone or tablet.
The system, which does not require the senior to wear a device, press a button, or make a phone call, also features custom alerts that notify users of any out-of-the-ordinary behavior.
Geneva Knoles, director of Visiting Angels, a senior home care agency with offices in San Luis Obispo and Valencia, Calif., said, “What impresses me the most about SafeinHome is that we both have the same goal to keep seniors at home for as long as they want. Unlike personal emergency response systems where the senior has to push a button to get help, SafeinHome doesn’t require the senior to do anything. It’s a passive system, and an aging parent is comforted knowing family members are checking in regularly.”
