Look who is (or will be 65) this year

For the past few years, the Long-Term Living Industry Guide has published a list of well-known celebrities, writers, politicians and other who reach the 65-milestone. As the boomers start becoming the “older generation,” I’ve found that the new elderhood will have a different look than the “Greatest Generation.”

While these folks may never be your clients (or at least not for a long time), their associates, friends and fans most likely will require your services in the future. Today, facilities are gearing up for the “senior invasion” with new features, services, amenities and experience to satisfy an active and involved population.

In the literary world, authors Danielle Steel, Tom Clancy, P.J. O’Rourke, and Stephen King reach the Medicare-eligible ranks along with musicians Iggy Pop, Elton John, Rolling Stones’ Ron Wood and Meat Loaf.

The Hollywood contingent includes personalities Ted Danson, Larry David, Teri Garr, David Letterman, Glenn Close, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jane Curtin.

That leaves us with the politicians: Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

These are just some of the names you know. By 2030, about 20 percent of the population will be senior citizens. It’s a daunting thought. While they might still be vibrant, energized and engaged right now, eventually most boomers will require long-term care services in one form or another.

I wonder if Stephen King would prefer a retirement community reminiscent of The Shining’s Overlook Hotel.
