IOM recognizes LTSS in electing Stone to membership

LeadingAge's Robyn Stone, DrPH, was one of 70 new members and 10 foreign associates named to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) today at the IOM's annual meeting.

Stone, senior vice president for research at LeadingAge and executive director of the LeadingAge Center for Applied Research, and the others were chosen by current active members through a selective process that recognizes major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, healthcare and public health. Election to the IOM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine.

“I’m one of the few IOM members who is affiliated with the field of long-term services and supports, and I believe my election is an acknowledgement of the important role this field has in shaping the future of aging services,” Stone said. “I’m so pleased that the IOM is looking for ways to address both the health and social needs of older adults today and tomorrow. And I’m really looking forward to making a contribution to this effort while raising the visibility of the great work that LeadingAge and its members are doing.”

Stone has worked in long-term care research and aging policy for more than 35 years, serving the White House as deputy assistant secretary for disability, aging and long-term care policy, and as acting assistant secretary for aging in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the Clinton administration, during which time she also was on the staff of the administration's Task Force on Health Care Reform. She also served as a senior researcher at the National Center for Health Services and at Project Hope's Center for Health Affairs and was on the staff of the 1989 Bipartisan Commission on Comprehensive Health Care.

Speakiing at Monday's general session of the LeadingAge annual meeting, Stone told attendees: "We are not just in the care business. We are in the health management business," adding that those in the industry need to measure their efforts to share their sucesses.
