Indiana nursing home CEO fired

American Senior Communities (ASC) has fired CEO James G. Burkhart “effective immediately,” according to a company news release.

The action comes three days after the FBI and other federal agencies raided his multi-million dollar home in Carmel, Ind., and the company’s headquarters in Indianapolis.

Authorities have not said why Burkhart’s home was raided, but an internal ASC review concluded the federal investigation “does not touch upon the operation of any nursing home serviced by the ASC,” according to the release.

The company has launched a search for an interim and permanent CEO. Chief executive responsibilities have temporarily been assumed by ASC’s board of managers, each of whom has experience in healthcare.

ASC manages nearly 100 senior care facilities and is one of the largest nursing home management companies in Indiana. The company is under contract to manage 60 skilled nursing and assisted living facilities owned by the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. HHC is not a subject of this investigation, said spokesman Curt Brantingham.

In 2010, ASC agreed to pay $376,432 in penalties to settle a complaint that it employed seven workers who were ineligible under federal rules for reasons including the loss of licenses and a criminal conviction. At the time, it was the largest such settlement to date.
