Friday is National Day of Recognition for LTC Physicians
This Friday is National Day of Recognition for Long Term Care (LTC) Physicians.
The observance was begun in 2010 by the U.S. Congress at the urging of the organization now known as AMDA–The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine. An AMDA House of Delegates resolution from the Georgia Medical Directors Association called for honoring the memory and work of AMDA founder William Dodd, MD, CMD, according to the organization. “Dr. Dodd was a community physician who recognized that residents of nursing homes were patients with complex medical problems and that physicians needed to be involved in establishing the standards of management and clinical care for the frail elderly and other residents in [LTC] facilities,” AMDA says.
AMDA, on its website, has made available certificates that nursing center leaders and others can print out and present to the LTC physicians with whom they work. The site also offers a sample press release to send to the local media and other resources. AMDA encourages communities to share photos of the physicians with their certificates on Twitter using the hashtag #LTCDocsDay. Some of the photos will be shared at the organization’s annual meeting March 19 to 22.
