Friday afternoon webcast to discuss seniors and the flu

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is hosting a live webcast at 1:15 p.m. EST today in the effort to remind and educate seniors about flu season. Appropriately titled, “Flu: What Seniors Need to Know,” the webcast will feature HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and CMS Administrator Donald Berwick as guest speakers, along with members of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the AARP.

“Each year in the U.S., deaths from flu-related causes range from 3,300 to 48,600 (average of 23,600), and more than 200,000 are hospitalized from serious flu complications. Ninety percent of flu-related deaths and more than half of flu-related hospitalizations occur in people age 65 and older,” according to a Flu.gov fact sheet paired with the webcast’s announcement.
