Evangelical Lutheran tops annual nonprofit operators list

The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society in South Dakota tops the list of not-for-profit senior living operators in the U.S., according to this year's LeadingAge/Ziegler 100 report.

Following the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society in the top five list of operators are the National Senior Campuses in Maryland, the ACTS Retirement Life Communities, Inc. in Pennsylvania, Presbyterian Homes and Services in Minnesota and Covenant Retirement Communities in Illinois.

The report, (known as the LZ 100) is a collaboration between LeadingAge, the nonprofit nursing home provider association and Ziegler, an underwriter of financing for senior living, housing and healthcare providers. It ranks the not-for-profits by the number of units owned and operated, representing the number of residents served, not by financial success.

The systems represented in the listing range from 18,934 units to 782 units. The 10 largest providers of senior living represent approximately 36 percent of the total number of units for all systems in LZ 100. In the last ten years the average annual growth rate in total units is nearly three percent, according to the report.

The report states that companies in the LZ 100 have grown through expansion. Nearly 90 percent of the listed operators have added memory support units. Also, 170 small house communities have been sponsored. And, of the nearly 201,000 units represented, 54 percent offer affordable housing.
