ESa provides design services in architecture, interior architecture, master planning, and space planning for senior living communities across the country. The firm’s experience is backed with extensive research on the aging population and the belief that design is about creating wellness environments. Dedicated to the principle of “human-centered” design, ESa combines aesthetics and functionality in response to the needs of its clients. The firm is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Will you be applying principles of sustainable or “green” design to long-term care projects and, if so, how?

There are a number of ways that “green” design can be incorporated into long-term care projects: utilization of gray water or well water for landscape irrigation; geothermal HVAC systems and solar panel electricity production can reduce demand on public utilities; and green products can be used in floorings, ceiling tile, paint, wallcovering, and wood cabinetry. The industry is still undergoing an adjustment in the realm of green design. As residents’ tastes and values change, particularly with the near-future entry of baby boomers, green design will become more of a focus.
