Dementia quality measures available

The Dementia Work Group’s proposed quality measures for improving outcomes for people with dementia have been republished online and are available for download at no charge at GeriatricsCareOnline.org.

The measures, which are not clinical guidelines, are designed to help clinicians accurately and appropriately evaluate and monitor disease status, according to the American Geriatrics Society (AGS), one of the member organizations of the work group. The measures also address treatment, best practices for enhancing safety and adverse event avoidance, and increasing awareness of advance planning for those with dementia and their caregivers.

The Dementia Work Group was formed in 2010 by the AGS, the American Academy of Neurology, AMDA‒Dedicated to Long-Term Care Medicine, the American Psychiatric Association and the American Medical Association’s Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement. The measures originally were published in the Journal of the American Academy of Neurology and now appear in an online version of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
