Three houses combine to make up this assisted living residence. The largest of these is the two-story, 48-resident “Big House,” which is arranged in three groupings, or “households,” of 16 residents, each around a grand stair. The residents here are cognitively alert but physically frail. The main floor of the Big House includes the dining room, activity area, cafT and administrative offices. Each of the other two, one-story, houses is home to 16 residents with special care needs stemming from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Each of these houses has its own life-skill alcoves and Snoezelen rooms. An interior courtyard includes a sensory garden, which emphasizes plantings that enhance sensory recall. An enclosed connecting porch links these two houses, providing a secure wandering loop. Living rooms were sized to accommodate six to eight people sitting informally, as in someone’s home, helping to create an intimate community within a residence for 80 people. |
