CMS adds another $275 million in funding for state system improvements

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is giving states a new chance to compete for $275 million in funding to develop more efficient multi-payer models and improve care delivery.

Under the new State Innovation Models initiative, announced this week, states can apply for funding to design and build system improvements or to defray implementation costs of information systems that bring insurers, providers, service organizations and other parties together in a multi-payer system of healthcare delivery.

CMS has earmarked $225 million in funding to divide among 25 states’ design projects. Five additional awards totalling $50 million will be available for testing system models that have already been designed.

Applications will be reviewed by CMS and its Office of the Actuary as well as an independent review panel.
