Chronic pain tip sheet released

Steps to follow when taking a medical history or conducting a physical examination are enumerated as part of the American Association for Long Term Care Nursing’s (AALTCN’s) new tip sheet to help healthcare professionals evaluate chronic pain. The steps are designed to help nurses and others determine the scope of the pain as well as its causes and type.

Properly managed pain can increase the quality of life and decrease the risk of other health issues, such as depression, for residents, notes author Lisa Byrd, PhD, FNP-BC, GNP-BC, of the nursing schools at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the University of South Alabama.

The tip sheet is accessible via the December issue of the Annals of Long-Term Care, an official publication of the American Geriatrics Society and a partner of the AALTCN, at the link in the first paragraph.
