Brookdale tops list of nation’s largest senior living providers
Brookdale Senior Living has overtaken Emeritus Senior Living this year for the title of the nation’s largest senior living provider, according to the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA), in the release of its annual list of the national’s top 80 largest providers. The list ranks for-profit providers based on reported total resident capacity.
Brookdale’s acquisition of the operations of Horizon Bay Retirement Communities drove it to the top of the list for 2012, for a total of 63,472 residents.
After Brookdale and Emeritus, the next three largest companies in the list remain unchanged from 2011 and include Holiday Retirement, Sunrise Senior Living and Life Care Services LLC.
2011 saw a number of REIT-based acquisitions, higher absorption, major management deals and small amounts of construction, leading to a number of shakeups in the list, according to ALFA. The top 80 senior living providers now account for a total operational resident capacity of nearly 504,000 (up 9 percent from 2011), including more than 245,000 independent living and almost 239,000 in licensed assisted living, ALFA reports.
