Atty Gen. Holder to resign from DOJ

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Jr. today announced his intention to resign as soon as his replacement is confirmed, according to several national media sources.

Holder discussed his plans with President Barack Obama at the White House over Labor Day weekend, according to an article in the New York Times.

Holder’s six-year tenure has been known for its focus on financial fraud, including false billings to Medicare and Medicaid. In 2009, Holder and U.S. Health and Human Services then-Secretary Kathleen Sebelius formed the Health Care Fraud Prevention and Enforcement Action Team, or HEAT, to track down providers who were defrauding the Medicare/Medicaid system. Since its inception, the task force has charged more than 1,500 defendants who submitted nearly $6 billion in false claims to the Medicare program, according to the Department of Justice.
