Week honors volunteers

Since 1974, Points of Light has celebrated those who reach out into the community to help others in need. This year, the week of April 6 to 12 marks the 40th anniversary of the National Volunteer Week program.

This year’s theme—Celebrating Service—recognizes individuals who take action and participate in solving problems in their communities. From all walks of life, socioeconomic backgrounds and, at times, physical challenges, these individuals use their collective skills and talents to make a difference. They are valuable working partners with social service, and healthcare agencies, schools and a variety of other community organizations.

Volunteerism is growing in light of advances in technology and social networking. It is easier to locate organizations that individuals would like to connect with.
