National Senior Games set for Cleveland

The city of Cleveland, Ohio, is preparing for a “silver tsunami” this summer—silver athletes, that is. The National Senior Games Association (NSGA), a multi-sport organization of the United States Olympic Committee, anticipates that 13,000 athletes will take part in the event, held July 19–August 1, 2013.

The two weeks of activities will include track and field events, swimming, archery, cycling, 5K and 10K races, tennis, shuffleboard, softball, badminton, golf, bowling, horseshoes and bocce. Even pickleball is a competition sport.

Participating athletes must be age 50 or older and must have qualified previously at a qualifying site, such as a state-level NGSA event. Men and women will compete separately in individual sports.

The National Senior Games have been held every other year since 1987. The 2013 National Games are sponsored by Humana.

Registration deadline for qualified athletes is May 1, 2013. To register, see the National Registration page.
