A local hospital, housing a skilled nursing wing on its campus, recognized the need for an assisted living environment to round out the continuum of care for the historic community of Atchison, Kansas, and sought an agreement locating a new facility in the community.

The site of the assisted living residence is two blocks from the hospital, heavily wooded and in an established neighborhood that had deteriorated and had not seen development for several years. Because of site constraints, a two-story scheme that honored the historic homes of the town determined the design approach.

Resident rooms are placed in two two-story wings that contain small sitting areas. Each room is fully ADA-accessible, with a kitchenette and a state-of-the-art resident-call system that activates two-way communication with staff.

The central area allows for activities in a two-story open plan that provides interaction between floors. The kitchen also opens directly to the dining area, with a low counter that permits resident participation in kitchen activities throughout the day. Numerous interior sitting areas, a large front porch and an elevated rear deck allow for multiple settings for socialization.
