In 1998, the Glenview Village Board and the citizens of Glenview invited project teams to proposals for the acquisition of development parcels at the former Glenview Naval Air Station (GNAS). Approximately 714 of the total 1,121 acres are currently being redeveloped as residential neighborhoods, a mixed-use retail and entertainment complex, an 18-hole championship golf course and golf learning center, senior housing facilities, a business park and private-sector recreation facilities.

Chestnut Square at The Glen won the competition for a 5-acre moderate- to high-density senior housing parcel, which is suited to meet the needs of moderate-income seniors. The site is located in the center of the former GNAS and acts as a transition between the Great Park and relocated Chapel across the street, adjacent residential neighborhoods and the retail complex to the north.

The design goal for Chestnut Square was to develop an identity that reinforces Glenview’s character and community goals through massing and material selections of the Arts and Crafts style. Another goal was to meet Glenview’s minimum landscaping requirement and enliven the garden in the southwest courtyard, and trellis-covered patios in the north and south courtyards, to offer residents outdoor areas for social gatherings. The layout of the floor plans encourages residents’ independence by giving them opportunities to choose activities from a variety of spaces, whether they are inside or outdoors. In addition, the interior detailing of columns, trellises and millwork in the common areas of the building alludes to the Arts and Crafts aesthetic.
