Long-Term Living wins Gold Award in journalism competition
CLEVELAND (April 30, 2014) – Long-Term Living’s editorial coverage of a senior care network’s testing and implementation of a program to reduce or reverse the effects of dementia has earned a Gold Award in the Best Print/Digital Integration category of the 2014 American Society of Healthcare Publication Editors (ASHPE) awards competition.
The Best Print/Digital Integration category recognizes works that “demonstrate the interactive capabilities of a web-based publication incorporating print, digital and online features.” The Long-Term Living editorial package included articles, a photo gallery, videos, podcasts, a Q&A and a blog, all detailing how the Eliza Jennings Senior Care Network in Northeast Ohio conducted the first U.S. pilot of a Japanese program called SAIDO Learning and subsequently executed the program in its facilities. The Eliza Jennings effort, which received Long-Term Living’s 2013 OPTIMA Award and also was featured in the media brand’s September 2013 print and digital issues, led to the SAIDO Learning program being made available to other senior living communities across the country.
“The program’s potential to reduce care needs and care costs could take on increased importance in the United States as the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia increases with the aging population,” note Long-Term Living’s Editor-in-Chief Pamela Tabar, Senior Editor Lois A. Bowers and Managing Editor Sandra Hoban. All three contributed to the winning entry.
Long-Term Living editors previously have won awards in the ASHPE competition, most recently in 2013, 2012 and 2010 (scroll to bottom of page).
Also winning awards in the 2014 ASHPE contest were Long-Term Living sister media brands Behavioral Healthcare and Healthcare Informatics. Behavioral Healthcare earned Bronze Awards in the Best Case History and Best Legislative/Government Article categories. Healthcare Informatics won a Bronze Award in the Best Special Report/Section category.
Long-Term Living editors are finalists for top journalism honor
CLEVELAND (February 10, 2014) – An editorial package by the editors of Long-Term Living has earned them places as finalists for a Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Award, which has been called the Pulitzer Prize of business-to-business journalism. Winners will be announced at a March 14 event in New York City.
The Vendome Group media brand editors’ entry, in the Best Subject-Related Package category, includes articles, a photo gallery, videos, podcasts, a Q&A and a blog, all detailing how one senior care network—Eliza Jennings in Northeast Ohio—tested and implemented the first U.S. pilot of a Japanese program that reduces or reverses the effects of dementia. The Eliza Jennings effort, which received Long-Term Living’s 2013 OPTIMA Award, led to the SAIDO Learning program being made available to other senior living communities across the country.
“The program’s potential to reduce care needs and care costs could take on increased importance in the United States as the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia increases with the aging population,” the Long-Term Living editors noted in their entry. Contributing to the editorial package were Editor-in-Chief Pamela Tabar, Senior Editor Lois A. Bowers and Managing Editor Sandra Hoban.
The Neal Awards are sponsored by American Business Media (ABM), an association of business information providers. The competition was established in 1955 to recognize editorial excellence by business media brand editors and is named in honor of ABM’s first managing director. Awards presented in 2014 recognize work published between Dec. 1, 2012, and Nov. 30, 2013.
The Long-Term Living editors’ entry is one of 173 finalists chosen from a field of 612 original submissions. Ultimately, 45 winners will be named in 21 categories.
“I don’t think we could have picked a better group of finalists this year,” said Mike Marchesano, ABM managing director. “Each of these brands and content producers have created cutting-edge work that inspires and informs the industry. We congratulate all of this year’s Neal Award finalists and look forward to honoring them for their outstanding work.”
Long-Term Living Announces Eliza Jennings Senior Care Winner of 2013 OPTIMA Award
Eliza Jennings Wins Annual Award for Implementation of SAIDO Learning Program
CLEVELAND (July 15, 2013) – Long-Term Living is pleased to announce the Eliza Jennings Senior Care Network as the winner of the 2014 OPTIMA Award for their implementation of the SAIDO Learning program. SAIDO Learning is a drug-free program developed in Japan to improve the quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and reduce their overall required levels of care.
Eliza Jennings implemented the program’s sole U.S.-based trial in May 2011 at the organization’s main skilled nursing site in Lakewood, Ohio. “We started seeing results literally within the first week,” said President and CEO Deborah Hiller. “I could see that the program was not only totally consistent with person-centered care, it could drive it.”
SAIDO Learning reduces and even reverses effects of cognition loss by stimulating the prefrontal cortex of the brain through simple reading, writing, and arithmetic exercises. By spending 30 minutes a day on highly targeted brain-exercising sessions, residents are able to perform other tasks more easily for the remainder of the day.
(Aug. 12, 2013, Eliza Jennings received approval to serve as the first training/licensing center for the first SAIDO program licensee site within the United States. You can read more about Eliza Jennings and SAIDO Learning, and view a video of the program in action, as part of Long-Term Living’s coverage of the 2013 OPTIMA Award winners at https://www.iadvanceseniorcare.com/SAIDO.)
About the OPTIMA Award
Since 1996, the annual Long-Term Living OPTIMA Award has honored long-term care communities that enact proactive projects to enhance resident care and resident quality of life. The OPTIMA Award winner is selected by a five-judge panel of experts from the long-term care community, using a double-blind entry judging process that is operated by a third-party Award Coordinator. No one from Long-Term Living or its parent company, Vendome Group, is involved in the judging process.
