NIH addresses health disparities of chronic diseases

The Natinoal Institues of Health wants to get outside the vacuum.

Where people live, work and play can influence the development and progress of crhnoic disease and conditions. So, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) is launching the Transdiciplinary Collaborative Centers for Health Disparities Research on Chronic Disease prevenetion program.

The program will look for ecological approaches to address the rate and types of chronic diseases among racial and ethnic minority groups, underserved populations, people of less privileged socio-economic status as well as groups subject to discrimination with poorer health outcomes often attributed to being socially disadgvantaged.

Two centers will focus there efforts on developing, implementing and disseminating community-based, mulitlevel interventiosn to target chronic diseases including heart disease, cancer and diabetes. The centers will have a combined $20 million in funding over five years, pending available funds.

"Multilevel interventions that take into account complex interactions between indiviudals and their envieornments can better address determinants of health and enhance chronic disease prevention and health promotion for local communities," Said Eliseo J. Perez-Stable, director of NIMHD.
