UPMC honors leader in senior mental health

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Senior Services has named Charles F. Reynolds III, MD, as 2015 Grand Champion for exceptional leadership in senior services.

Reynolds is an internationally renowned professor of geriatric psychiatry at UPMC and the director of the university’s Aging Institute. Reynolds has contributed extensive research on mood and sleep disorders in older people and is a champion of senior brain health, including depression prevention and improved mental health services for the elderly. In 2016, he also will take over as editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.

“Dr. Reynolds’ commitment to serving senior citizens, both locally and abroad, is reflected in his ongoing research and advocacy initiatives,” said Deborah Brodine, president of UPMC Community Provider Services, in a university press release. “He is an internationally renowned expert in geriatric psychiatry and we are proud to have him as a member of our team at UPMC, as the leader of our Aging Institute with the University of Pittsburgh, and as our honoree as this year’s Grand Champion.”

UPMC Senior Services is part of a suite that includes university programs in geriatric medicine and geriatric nursing, community support services and outreach, home-based programs, and research for improving the lives of older adults. The John A. Hartford Foundation, a national philanthropic organization dedicated to improving the care of older adults, has named UPMC a “national center of excellence in geriatric medicine.”
